When it comes to the process of removals or exporting goods from the UK to the EU or the other way around, it involves quite a number of bureaucratic technicalities. These need to be done systematically in order to see through the process smoothly and without any hindrance. Often times, having to deal with paper work and taxes is not always easy. This is where a customs agent comes in. They take on the job of overseeing the process for you by arranging the right paperwork, ensuring that everything is in line with legal requirements and relevant taxes are paid to the authorities responsible.
If you plan to import to the UK, you will need to produce a transfer of residence (ToR) form to benefit from a VAT relief. Otherwise, you will have to pay an import duty to customs. So, the ToR form will prove that you have tax relief. This is a document issued through the HMRC, which the customer needs to apply for this by submitting relevant documents and gaining access to tax relief.
The same documents would apply except for countries such as Switzerland, Norway and Ireland. At the same time, additional documents may be required for the type of goods or commodities being transported, along with the rules of the European country in question.
Transit forms, or T1 documents as they are called, are what you would need to move goods from the UK to an EU country. On the other hand, the GMR or Goods Movement Reference is a number issued via the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS). With the help of this service, you can obtain a reference for moving goods through places that use the goods vehicle movement service.
Our Europe Express team can assist you if you import your possessions from the UK. You can claim a relief tax for selected personal property movements via a ToR (transfer of residence). These apply to custom clearance of personal goods going to Great Britain from outside the country and to Northern Ireland from outside the European Union (EU). By the way, did you know that Europe Express can handle any express clearance service within 24 hours? That is, given that the customer provides all required documents in one go. Then, it will only be a matter of hours for our agents.
The documents you will receive will enable you to transport the personal possessions of your customer through the UK/EU border at Dover-Calais, and continue transit within the European Union territory until you reach your destination.
You are going to receive your documents from us by email according to the following schedule. Alternatively we can supply your driver with an application that will display customs clearance documents on their mobile phone’s screen.
Document Processing Exceptions
We are unable to process Brexit customs clearance documents during public holidays in France. Orders for UK customs clearance documents after Brexit during the days listed in the table below will be processed the following day and supplied one day after.
After you find your ideal service provider, in this case, a customs agent, the process involves having to compile a number of required documents and a list of the inventory in question. If the agent is in the UK, and the removal is to go to an EU country, then this is an export service, and vice versa.
The documentation would include elements such as the passport, insurance, the inventory list, proof of residence in the UK and the EU country, the self certificate etc. This is if you are planning to move from the UK to the EU. Documents needed the other way round might differ slightly. There are many customs agents who provide this service.
Most countries in Europe are part of the European Union and there is no customs process when crossing the border. The few exceptions are: the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the Kingdom of Norway. Moving goods to or from any of these countries requires a proper customs declaration and all the related documentation. Luckily the process is similar for each of the mentioned countries. At Europe Express, we can act as your Brexit customs clearance agents for domestic removals in circumstances fit for the EU customs procedure code C43.
This confirms that your customer is transferring their used household objects for more than six months at their usual UK residence, and they don’t intend to sell or give them away after receiving them in their new place in the EU. Also, to use this customs procedure to move their personal effects to the EU, your customer must have established their residence in the EU within the last 12 months. In such circumstances, the EU customs authorities will grant relief from VAT and import duties.
A UK citizen starts to work for a company in Romania. He has already received his residence permit from the Romanian authorities, and intends to stay there for at least one year. The person can transfer personal property from the UK to Romania free of VAT and import duties.
We recommend you apply for the TOR by sending all relevant documents to the HMRC at least 01 to 1.5 months before the collection. The approval process usually would take between two weeks to 1.5 months. This would depend on how busy they are. You can expect a smoother approach if you become prepared earlier on.
That is not a problem. Our main service is providing Brexit-proof customs clearance for residential removals, but we can offer the same for all kinds of exports. If you’re moving goods to or from the EU, Switzerland or Norway and need help dealing with customs after Brexit, look no further.
